A man has died after he was injured while working on a high-pressure water pipe at the IMAX theatre construction site in Darling Harbour.

Emergency services were called about 10 am following reports a man had been injured in an explosion.

NSW Ambulance Inspector Giles Buchanan told the Herald the 49-year-old man was working on the 21st floor of the construction site when a cap from a high-pressure fire hydrant came off and hit him in the side of the face. He said the scene had been "horrific", with the man's colleagues doing their best to administer first aid.

Ambulance staff placed the man in an induced coma and took him to St Vincent's Hospital, where he died from his injuries. NSW Police Inspector Gary Coffey said management of the construction site had organised counselling for workers who witnessed the incident. "A crime scene has been established and police are conducting inquiries into the circumstances of the incident," an NSW Police statement read. Police will prepare a report for the information of the coroner.
